Marina Valentina is an artist currently living in Santa Monica, California. She has graduated from Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, as well as Cal Arts. She has kept herself busy since she graduated in '03 by writing and illustrating a children's book- Lost in the Roses (available at any major bookstore), teaching animation, life drawing, painting, video, still life, and illustration classes to people ages 6-20, worked as a motion graphics artist, character animator, and illustrator. No matter what creative endeavors Marina takes on professionally, she has and will always come back to her roots in the fine arts because of her deep rooted need for freedom in the methods she chooses to express, create, and the way she chooses to live her life, as well.
Her work varies in styles, subjects, shapes, sized and colors, but the qualities that do run through all her work are- 1-movement- studying it directly through various forms of dance. 2- A suggestive and dreamlike quality through it's subject matter- sometimes completely abstract, other times quite surreal. 3- playfulness and whimsy- rarely using straight lines and often including strange and silly characters.
The two peaces in the Earthworks 02: Transformation show depict transformation through the movement of organic shapes. We are constantly transforming as we are constantly moving. There is no single transformation that happens on its own, everything stems from something prior. Everything works together, having an impact on everything else. Perhaps this is why there is no element on it's own in these pieces; it all transforms at all times, ever growing, ever changing.
